10 Signs Your Dog Is Quietly Suffering (That You Might Not Notice)
Partager
Unlike us, a dog doesn't complain. By an instinct for survival inherited from its wild ancestors, it tends to hide pain for as long as possible. The result: many owners only spot a problem at an already advanced stage. Here are the most commonly missed signs.
1. It hesitates before jumping
A second's pause before jumping onto the sofa or into the car, where it used to jump without thinking, is often the very first signal.
2. It's stiff when waking up
A slower gait in the first few minutes after resting, which improves once "warmed up", is typical of early-stage osteoarthritis.
3. It licks or nibbles a specific area
Repeated licking of a paw or joint is often an attempt at self-soothing in the face of localized pain.
4. It becomes more irritable
A usually docile dog that growls when touched in a specific spot, or that isolates itself more, often expresses physical discomfort rather than a change in character.
5. It breathes faster at rest
Panting without effort or heat can indicate chronic pain, even if subtle.
6. It loses muscle in its hindquarters
Visible muscle wasting in the thighs is a classic sign of hip dysplasia or advanced osteoarthritis: the dog compensates by using its hind legs less.
7. It refuses activities it used to love
Less enthusiasm for walks, play, or stairs is not always related to "normal" aging — it's often pain speaking.
8. Its posture changes at rest
A dog that avoids lying completely on its side, or that frequently changes position, instinctively seeks the least painful posture.
9. It loses its appetite for no apparent reason
Chronic pain can reduce appetite, even without an identified digestive problem.
10. It avoids certain floors
Systematically avoiding slippery tiles or parquet flooring often indicates a fear of falling due to a fragile joint.
What to do if you recognize these signs?
Veterinary advice remains essential for an accurate diagnosis. In parallel, reducing daily shocks — particularly repeated jumps to the sofa or bed thanks to a soft-step pet stair — immediately relieves pressure on already weakened joints, while awaiting or in addition to treatment.
